How A Sweet Tooth Causes Rapid Ageing |

Got a sweet tooth? Much as you love sugar, did you know it is the underlying cause for skin rashes, acne, spots and dully, flaky skin? Some us are easily seduced by sugar, with every bite accelerating the ageing process. The daily biscuit quota is where it all begins: sugar molecules attach themselves to the protein and collagen fibers in the skin, which gradually weakens the layers of collagen in our skin, slowly making the collagen brittle and dry. What transpires is skin with less volume, sagginess and spots. Sugar has a domino effect in the body. Hormones, enzymes, immune cells and energy levels are hugely affected by the intake of glucose; the function of each chemical and neurotransmitters slows down dramatically. Even vitamins such as calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium and vitamin c are taken from various parts of the body to neutralise the glucose effect. There are some parts of the body which are extremely sensitive to sugar: the thyroid (responsible for hydratihg skin) and the adrenal glands. Excess bombardemet of sugar strains these glands, eventually leading to a sluggish thyroid (your skin will become dry and flaky) and burnt out adrenals (hollowness around the eyes and saggy jowls). In a nutshell, the more sugar we consume, the faster age.
